Catalonia - Wine Regions
Priorat DOQ
Priorat is one of Catalonia’s most prestigious wine regions, known for its powerful red wines made primarily from Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan) grapes. The region is characterized by its rugged, steep vineyards and unique 'llicorella' slate soils, which impart a distinctive minerality to the wines. Priorat was granted the Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOQ) status, the highest classification in Spanish wine, reflecting the exceptional quality of its wines. The intense, full-bodied reds from this region are highly sought after, with many boutique wineries producing limited batches that have garnered international acclaim.
Penedès DO
Penedès is one of the most well-known wine regions in Catalonia, particularly famous for producing Cava, Spain’s signature sparkling wine. Located near Barcelona, Penedès is a diverse region that also produces high-quality still wines, including crisp whites from the Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Parellada grapes, as well as red wines from international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The region is known for its innovation in winemaking, with a mix of traditional and modern techniques. The vineyards stretch from the coastal plains to the inland hills, creating a wide range of microclimates that contribute to the diversity of Penedès wines.

The region is known for its robust red wines, often made from Garnacha and Cariñena, as well as fresh, aromatic whites. Empordà’s wine heritage dates back to Roman times, and today it is home to both traditional and innovative wineries. The vineyards are influenced by the Mediterranean climate and the strong Tramontana winds, which contribute to the unique character of the wines. Empordà is also celebrated for its sweet wines, particularly the Garnatxa de l’Empordà, a fortified wine with rich, raisin-like flavors.
Montsant DO
Montsant DO, located in the heart of Catalonia, is a relatively young wine region that has quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality wines at accessible prices. Surrounding the prestigious Priorat region, Montsant shares similar soil types and grape varieties, particularly Garnacha and Cariñena, but offers a more approachable style. The wines of Montsant are known for their balance, with vibrant fruit flavors, smooth tannins, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. This region has become a favorite for wine enthusiasts seeking excellent value wines that capture the essence of Catalonia’s terroir.
Terra Alta DO
Terra Alta is a lesser-known wine region in southern Catalonia, renowned for its white wines made from Garnacha Blanca (White Grenache). The region’s sunny, dry climate and high-altitude vineyards contribute to the freshness and intensity of its wines. Terra Alta also produces robust red wines and elegant rosés, primarily from Garnacha and Cariñena. The region’s wine culture dates back centuries, with many of the wineries being family-run and committed to preserving traditional methods. The white wines from Terra Alta, with their floral aromas and bright acidity, have recently gained recognition in both national and international markets.
Costers del Segre DO

The region is divided into several subzones, each with distinct microclimates, ranging from high-altitude vineyards to river valleys. Costers del Segre produces a wide variety of wines, including structured reds, vibrant whites, and refreshing rosés. The region is also recognized for its pioneering role in introducing international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to Catalonia. The combination of traditional and modern techniques has made Costers del Segre one of the most dynamic wine regions in the area.
Alella DO
Alella DO, located just north of Barcelona, is one of Catalonia’s smallest and oldest wine regions. Despite its proximity to the city, Alella is a hidden gem known for producing high-quality white wines from the Pansa Blanca (Xarel·lo) grape. The region’s sandy soils and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for fresh, aromatic wines with a distinct saline edge. Alella also produces red and sparkling wines, but it is the whites that truly stand out. With a winemaking history that dates back to Roman times, Alella offers a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation in its wines.
Conca de Barberà DO
Conca de Barberà is a historic wine region in central Catalonia, known for its role in the production of Cava and for its fresh, fruity wines made from the native Trepat grape. Trepat is typically used to produce light red and rosé wines with bright acidity and delicate red fruit flavors. Conca de Barberà’s vineyards benefit from the region’s unique combination of Mediterranean and continental climates, resulting in balanced wines with excellent aging potential. The region’s deep-rooted wine culture, combined with a growing interest in native grape varieties, has led to a resurgence in the popularity of Conca de Barberà wines.
Pla de Bages DO
