Rhone Valley - Wines

Côte-Rôtie

Côte-Rôtie is one of the Northern Rhône’s most prestigious red wines, known for its elegance, power, and aromatic complexity. Made primarily from Syrah, with a small percentage of Viognier often co-fermented, Côte-Rôtie wines are renowned for their layers of dark fruit, floral notes, and spice. The appellation is divided into two main slopes: Côte Blonde, which produces softer, more fragrant wines, and Côte Brune, known for its structured, tannic expressions. These wines are highly sought after for their ability to age gracefully over decades, developing even more depth and complexity with time.

Hermitage

Hermitage is the crown jewel of the Northern Rhône, producing powerful and long-lived Syrah wines. The steep, south-facing vineyards on the Hermitage hill create wines that are rich, full-bodied, and structured, with flavors of blackcurrant, leather, smoke, and spices. In addition to red wines, Hermitage is also known for exceptional white wines made from Marsanne and Roussanne, which are prized for their richness and complexity. Hermitage reds, especially from top producers, are considered some of the greatest wines in the world and can age for decades, gaining complexity and nuance.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation in the Southern Rhône, known for its rich, full-bodied red wines made from a blend of up to 13 grape varieties. Grenache typically dominates the blend, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other varieties. These wines are characterized by their ripe red fruit, spice, and herbaceous notes of garrigue. The terroir is marked by the region’s iconic galets roulés (rounded stones) that retain heat and contribute to the ripeness and concentration of the wines. Châteauneuf-du-Pape also produces white wines, which are less common but highly valued for their aromatic intensity and structure.

Cornas

Cornas is a small appellation in the Northern Rhône, known for producing some of the most intense and powerful Syrah wines in the region. Unlike its neighbors, Cornas wines are made entirely from Syrah and are known for their deep color, robust tannins, and flavors of black fruit, earth, and smoke. These wines are often more rustic in style compared to other Northern Rhône appellations, but they are highly valued for their authenticity and ability to age beautifully. Cornas is considered a hidden gem for those who appreciate bold, uncompromising red wines.

Saint-Joseph

Saint-Joseph is one of the largest appellations in the Northern Rhône, producing both red and white wines. The red wines are made primarily from Syrah and are known for their approachable style, with flavors of red and black fruits, pepper, and herbal notes. While not as concentrated as wines from Côte-Rôtie or Hermitage, Saint-Joseph wines offer excellent value and are often more accessible in their youth. The white wines, made from Marsanne and Roussanne, are fresh and aromatic, with notes of stone fruits, citrus, and floral elements. Saint-Joseph wines are versatile and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Gigondas

Gigondas is a Southern Rhône appellation that produces robust and full-bodied red wines, often considered a more affordable alternative to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are predominantly made from Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding structure and complexity. Gigondas wines are known for their rich flavors of blackberries, plums, and spice, with a rustic edge that adds character. The terroir, located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range, provides cooler temperatures that help maintain the wines’ balance and freshness. Gigondas is a favorite among lovers of traditional Rhône reds.

Condrieu

Condrieu is a small but prestigious appellation in the Northern Rhône, known for producing some of the world’s finest Viognier wines. These white wines are highly aromatic, with notes of peach, apricot, honeysuckle, and exotic spices. The steep, granitic slopes where the vineyards are planted provide ideal conditions for Viognier, resulting in wines that are rich, opulent, and full-bodied. Despite their lush character, Condrieu wines maintain a fresh acidity that balances their intensity. These wines are best enjoyed young to capture their vibrant aromatics, making them a unique offering in the world of Rhône whites.

Vacqueyras

Vacqueyras is a Southern Rhône appellation that produces red, white, and rosé wines, though it is primarily known for its red blends dominated by Grenache. The wines are similar in style to those of neighboring Gigondas, with flavors of ripe red and black fruits, spice, and a hint of earthiness. Vacqueyras wines are typically full-bodied and offer excellent value for their quality. The region’s diverse soils and warm climate contribute to the richness and complexity of the wines, making them a great choice for those who enjoy the bold, structured style of Southern Rhône reds.

Tavel

Tavel is a renowned rosé-only appellation in the Southern Rhône, often considered the ‘king of rosé wines.’ Unlike many other rosés, Tavel wines are known for their depth, structure, and ability to age. The wines are typically made from Grenache, Cinsault, and other Rhône varieties, resulting in a vibrant pink color and flavors of red berries, citrus, and spices. Tavel rosés are dry, with a full-bodied texture and refreshing acidity, making them versatile food pairings, especially with Mediterranean cuisine. The appellation’s commitment to producing serious, complex rosé sets it apart as a unique wine region in the Rhône Valley.
